POMONA -- Senior David Jaques played the game of his Bronco career, going 3-for-3 with a grand slam and six RBI as Cal Poly Pomona earned a split Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay, winning the opener 11-6 and losing the second game, 8-5.

The decision was made to play the series doubleheader Friday as rain is expected to hit Southern California late tonight and into Saturday morning.

The Broncos are now 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA, while the Otters are 2-9, 1-5.

Game 1: Broncos 11, CSU Monterey Bay 6

Cal Poly Pomona took command in the opener, sending 12 men to the plate and made it count with an eight-run third inning, capped by Jaques' grand slam.

Travis Taijeron led off the inning with a home run to left.  Otters starter Patrick McClain was ejected when he threw his first pitch to the next batter, Erik Riedel, who was hit by the pitch at the helmet.

Tyson Edwards was walked by Otters reliever Andrew Suarez-Lopez, and Richard McDowell added to the scoring with a two-run single. Two batters later, Michael Neff reached base on an error by the center fielder, scoring McDowell.

That set-up the slam for Jaques, who drove a 2-1 fastball over the left-field wall and CPP led 9-1.

Jaques missed out on the cycle by a triple. He had a sacrifice fly in the first that scored Marcus Makia, and added a run-scoring double in the sixth.

Sophomore RHP #Kevin Bosson# (2-1) performed well after a slow start in the first. After giving up one run on three hits in the first, he retired the next 17 Otters in order before giving up three runs on two hits in the seventh.

He finished with four strikeouts and scattered six hits with one walk.

Reliever Casey Yokubaitis struck out two in one inning of relief.

McDowell had two RBI in the opener, while Edwards had a double.

Brent Sargenti had two RBI for the Otters, while Nolan Murray, Ryan Chagonjian and Niko Kanakaris each doubled.

Game 2: CSU Monterey Bay 8, Broncos 5

The Otters took control of the game with a seven-run fifth inning on six hits. Sargenti delivered the big blow with a three-run double.

The Broncos answered with two runs in the fifth to cut CSUMB's lead to 8-2 and had a mini rally in the seventh, only to fall short.

Taijeron, who went 4-for-4 in the second game, singled and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Riedel followed with an RBI-double and later scored on a ground out by Edwards.

Jenzen Torres then homered off Otters reliever Corey Lathram to cut the lead to 8-5 with two outs, But Lathram settled down. He allowed a McDowell single and induced Makia on a fly out to right to end the game.

Sargenti finished with three RBI and was 2-for-3. Tyler Young had a pair of RBI and also had two hits along with Jordan Smeds.
