CPP looks to tie school record for consecutive wins Thursday night vs. CSU Monterey Bay

Box Score: Broncos 68, CSU Dominguez Hills 58

CARSON – It's shaping up to be another magical run for the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team.

The proof is in the numbers.

The Broncos captured their 11th straight win – one shy of tying the school record – and won their school-record ninth straight road game – with a convincing 68-58 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday night.

The victory over the Toros takes on added significance as CSUDH shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor on 21 of 35 shooting. But the difference on this night revolved around ball control as CPP forced 20 turnovers and fired a nifty 54.5 percent FGs (24 of 44).

Three players – senior Austin Swift, sophomore Matthew Rosser and freshman Mitchel Anderson – each scored a team-high 12 points in the victory for CPP, now 18-5 overall and tied for the CCAA lead with Humboldt State at 16-4 with two regular-season games remaining.

Senior Dahir Nasser showed again he is among the top point guards on the West Coast as he scored 11 points with four assists, three steals and a block. He entered play this week ranked 22nd in the NCAA in assist-turnover ratio at 2.56.

Both CPP and HSU hold a one-game advantage over Cal State San Bernardino (15-5 league). Should the two teams tie for the regular-season title, the Broncos would earn the conference's tournament top seed by virtue of their season sweep over the Lumberjacks.

CSU Dominguez Hills entered Saturday on the strength of a five-game winning streak and a 55-45 victory over CPP last month. The Toros defeated always-tough Cal State San Bernardino on Friday in overtime and had the momentum with their inside-outside game that features 3-point prowess and physical play in the paint.

But Coach Greg Kamansky's team applied its ball-control, high-percentage shot offense combined with its match-up zone defense and the results speak for themselves. The Broncos are nearly unbeatable when they shoot 50 percent from the floor as they improved to 95-9 (91 percent) when they hit that figure during coach's 10 years at the helm.

CPP built a first-half lead on the Temecula duo of Anderson and Rosser. Each scored seven points in the opening 20 minutes as the Broncos secured the lead with 7:55 left on Donnelle Booker's jumper that put CPP up 17-15 and eventually led 27-21 at the break.

The Broncos clung to the lead through most of the second half, but CSUDH kept in sight as it shot 70 percent from the floor (14 of 20). Tim McGrath's layup put the Toros ahead, 48-47, with 7:43 left.
Anderson tied the game at 49-49 with two free throws with 6:15 remaining, and the Broncos pulled ahead on five quick points from Swift – one on a 3-pointer and another from outside – and CPP led 54-51 with 4:56 remaining.

That spurt from Swift began a 13-2 run down the stretch and CSUDH never recovered.

Marcquintice Davis led the Toros (14-11, 14-6) with a game-high 15 points and Tim McLaurin had 14 off the bench.

The Broncos host Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday and complete the regular season at home against San Francisco State on Friday. The Lumberjacks are at Cal State East Bay on Wednesday and at UC San Diego on Friday.

BRONCO NOTES: The victory in Carson is the Broncos' first in three seasons when they won 79-76 in 2006-07… That CPP would face CSU Monterey Bay for a shot at tying the school record for consecutive wins is ironic as CSUMB snapped CPP's streak of 11 straight wins during last year's CCAA Tournament semifinals when the Otters defeated the Broncos in OT. The Broncos would go on to play for the national championship later that month… Rosser's 12 points are a career high for the sophomore. His previous high was 11 on two occasions this season… The Broncos are now 95-16 (85.6 percent) when they allow 60 points or less during the Kamansky era.
