POMONA – A record-setting night took place Thursday night for Cal Poly Pomona as hot-shooting and balanced play paid off in a one-sided 79-46 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball.
The Broncos' earned their record-tying 12th straight victory and pushed themselves to the brink of a second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association title. Behind the scoring of senior
Austin Swift and junior
Tobias Jahn, who each scored 15 points, CPP led from the outset and secured its largest margin of victory over the Otters in the teams' series history.
The Broncos and Humboldt State are tied for the conference lead at 17-4 with one game remaining. CPP takes on San Francisco State on Friday and the Lumberjacks are at UC San Diego. A Broncos victory would guarantee no less than a shared CCAA title and would mark the first time in school history that CPP had won back-to-back conference regular-season crowns.
Junior
Donnelle Booker's layup put CPP ahead by 20 points at 46-26 with 16:58 remaining and they pushed the lead to as many as 35 points down the stretch. It marked the largest lead of the season at any one time for CPP, which is 19-5 overall.
The victory was a sweet one for CPP, which had its 11-game winning streak snapped by CSUMB in last year's CCAA Tournament semifinals.
Swift finished 5-of-8 from the floor and was perfect in five attempts from the line. Jahn was 5-of-11 from the floor and led the Broncos in rebounds with seven. Teammates Matthew Rosser and Booker (a perfect 6-of-6 FGs) each scored 12 as CPP finished the night shooting 52.6 percent from the floor and turned the ball over just six times – all in the second half.
All 10 players scored for CPP as freshman
Mitchel Anderson kicked in seven points and freshman
Shaun Norum scored five in the final eight minutes of play.
BRONCO NOTES: The Broncos improved their stellar record during the
Greg Kamansky era when they shoot 50 percent or better from the floor. They are now 96-9 during Kamansky's 10 years at the helm – a 91.4 percent effort… Rosser's 12 tied his career high for the second straight night… The Broncos' 79 points are a season-best, their previous high was 75 against The Master's College (75-47 win)… Tomorrow night the Broncos honor their two seniors – Swift and
Dahir Nasser – in their final regular season game… The Broncos are now 34-1 all-time under Kamansky when they hold their opponent to less than 50 points.
