Box Score: Broncos 46, SFSU 42
POMONA – It may not have looked like a textbook-style game, but Cal Poly Pomona head coach Scott Davis loved what the scoreboard read when Friday night's game against San Francisco State was completed.
The Broncos, behind sophomore
Megan Ford and senior
Stephisha Walton, maintained control and held off hard-charging San Francisco State 46-42 in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's play at Kellogg Gym before a crowd of 866.
CPP finished the regular season with its fifth straight win and enter the CCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed with an overall record of 21-5 and 18-4 in the CCAA. The victory count is CPP's largest since going 23-7 during the 2003-04 season.
The Broncos will face seventh-seed Cal State San Bernardino in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament on Tuesday night. The game will be played at Kellogg Gym with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
Ford scored a game-high 11 points and Walton added 10 for the Broncos.
The Broncos fired just 14-of-51 from the floor (27.5 percent) and turned the ball over 20 times. However, they outscored the Gators 17-11 from the free-throw line and that was enough to earn the season series sweep over SFSU.
Junior
Reyana Colson was not at her best offensively, as she scored six points and was only 2-of-19 from the floor. But the Compton native pitched in off the glass with 10 rebounds as the Broncos held the advantage, 48-43.
Leading 40-33 with 3:13 remaining, SFSU went on a 6-0 run to make things interesting. A pair of free throws from Dominique Hunter, a jumper from Nicole Hicks and another pair of free throws from Hunter put the game at 40-39 CPP with 1:09 left.
Colson responded with a free throw on CPP's next possession, and the Gators' Jessica Hout-Freeman also hit a free toss and put the game at 41-40 with 45 seconds left.
On the inbounds play, sophomore
Nicolette Brown was fouled in the back court, and she made one of two FTs. SFSU missed out on cutting into the lead, and
Rosslyn Beard made the Gators pay when she scored two free throws, putting CPP up 44-40 with 39 seconds remaining.
Hunter missed on another layup attempt, and senior
Jessica Duran scored another set of free throws and the Broncos earned the win.
The Broncos finished just one game behind UC San Diego for the league crown, but this was a big night for Davis' team. They enter the postseason winners of nine of their last 10 and 17 of their last 20.
SFSU (15-15, 11-11) was led by Donisha Tate and Hunter's 10 points.
