POMONA -- Heavy drama took place Sunday afternoon for Cal Poly Pomona. And when the games were finished, head coach Mike Ashman could only shake his head and offer a smile.
The Broncos, who had 15 straight batters retired by Toros RHP Shane Youngdale, rallied big-time behind a grand slam by
Jenzen Torres and went on to defeat CSUDH 7-6 in 10 innings.
Then, not to be outdone, the Broncos struck with a four-run seventh to come-from-behind and sweep the Toros with a 5-4 nightcap victory in a seven-inning game.
The Broncos, now 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, completes the 4-game series with the Toros at 2 p.m. Monday in Carson.
Game 1: Broncos 7, CSU Dominguez Hills 6 (10 innings)
Toros junior RHP Shane Youngdale was perfect through 5 1/3 innings and threw no-hit ball for six innings as CPP found itself trailing 5-0 through eight innings.
Youngdale did a masterful job of keeping the Broncos off-balance with five strikeouts. He left the game after eight innings, allowing only
Erik Riedel's lead-off single in the seventh.
Mark Phillips came on in relief of Youngdale and served up back-to-back singles to pinch-hitters
Manny Navarro and
David Jaques. He then settled down and struck out Riedel and
Tyson Edwards to draw within an out of a shut-out victory.
But
Travis Taijeron singled to left and that set the stage for Torres. The Valencia native connected on a shot just to the right of the right-field scoreboard. He didn't think he got a hold of it by the sound of his voice after he left the batter's box, but the ball continued to carry and left Scolinos Field for the slam.
It was his fifth home run of the season.
Trailing 5-4,
Nick Tanos kept the inning alive with a single and tied the game when he scored on
Marcus Makia's double.
After an intentional walk to
Richard McDowell, Navarro earned his second single of the inning to load the bases. Jaques struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Toros got a run back in the 10th inning on John Skala's double to right center that scored Kevin Logan, who singled off Broncos reliever
Joshua Krist.
In the 10th,
Tyson Edwards connected on a one-out solo homer -- his first of the season -- to tie the game at 6-6.
Taijeron and Torres each walked off Toros reliever Don Wardour and
Robert Palmer laid down a beauty of bunt down third base that went for a hit.
Makia then flied out to center, but Taijeron couldn't advance on the potential sacrifce fly. It didn't matter, though, as McDowell came up and ripped a single that scored the game-winner.
Navarro had two hits.
Game 2: Broncos 5, CSU Dominguez Hills 4
Toros ace Brett Montgomery kept the Broncos at bay, giving up four hits and one run while striking out seven in his six innings as CSUDH led 3-1 entering the seventh inning.
The Toros added a run off
John Pollock in the seventh and led 4-1.
In the seventh, Jaques led off with a single. Two outs later, Edwards singled up the middle. Taijeron followed with an RBI-single and the Broncos cut the lead to 4-2.
After Torres was walked, Tanos came to the plate with the bases loaded. He drilled a double to right center that cleared the bases and the Broncos earned the sweep.
Pollock earned the win in one inning of relief. Tanos finished with four RBI on the game as he and Jaques had two hits apiece.
