Lau earns victory over All-American Preikschas in 5-4 loss to CSU Stanislaus

Broncos take a pair in singles, Wooldridge adds win in singles

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona Broncos women's tennis coach Sandy Kriezel knew freshman Christie Lau had a chance to be something special.

But what the Chino Hills native pulled off Sunday was nothing short of spectacular.

Lau defeated Cal State Stanislaus' 2010 All-CCAA No. 1 singles and All-American Verena Preikschas 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to cap a day that ended just short of a team victory in a 5-4 loss to the Warriors in CCAA tennis.

"Christie played amazingly well,'' Kriezel said. "To show such composure at a young age and play like a champion truly was an exhibition in class. She fought back in the first game, then geared up down the stretch. That was a big-time win.''

Lau improved to 6-0 overall.

Lau earlier teamed with junior Kaitlin Wooldridge in No. 2 doubles and the pair continued their solid play in 2010 with an 8-5 win over Vanesa Reibstein and Arina Polovnikova. The pair owns a record of 7-0 and 3-0 in the CCAA and made certain they'll be a force for the Broncos all season long.

"Christie and Kaitlin play so well together; they're in synch and feed off each other as well as a doubles team can,'' Kriezel said.

Wooldridge earned a win at No. 5 over Heather Cotter, 6-1, 6-3. The Fort Collins, Colo. native improved her record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in CCAA.

Seniors Jessica Winkler and Mallory Brady earned the other doubles win -- at No. 3 with an 8-1 win over Heather Cotter and Bree McClintock.

The Broncos (5-2, 2-1) are off until Thursday when they play at Vanguard.
