SAN BERNARDINO – In the 62-year history of Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball, no Bronco team had played five straight games on the road and won them all.
Until Tuesday night.
The Broncos fought back a talented Cal State San Bernardino team with seven free throws inside the final 46 seconds and upset the CCAA-leading Coyotes 63-59 before a crowd of 1,107 at Coussoulis Arena.
Junior
Donnelle Booker returned to his hometown and led the Broncos to their first road win in San Bernardino since the 2006-07 season. He scored 13 points that included four slam dunks. Sophomore
Dwayne Fells scored 12 and senior
Austin Swift and sophomore Matthew Rosser each had 11 in the victory.
The Broncos improved to 12-5 overall and 10-4 in the CCAA and are within a game of first place. CSUSB dropped to 13-5, 11-3 and lost only their third game in the last 31 games at Coussoulis.
In a back-and-forth game, CSUSB's Lawrence Tyson drained a 3-pointer from the deep right corner with 4:35 remaining in the game that pushed the Coyotes ahead, 52-47.
The Broncos immediately responded with a mini 5-0 run on a three-point play from Swift and a jumper from Rosser and the game was tied at 52-52 with 3:51 remaining.
After Corey Caston wowed the Coussoulis Arena crowd with a 3-pointer from 27 feet, CPP wasn't deterred. Fells hit a shot from the top of the key and CPP drew within a point – 55-54 with 2:58 left.
On CSUSB's next possession, Bryan LeDuc drove inside the lane and missed a two-footer, but was fouled by Dahir Nasser with 1:45 left. LeDuc, who overwhelmed CPP last month at Kellogg Gym with 25 points and 17 rebounds in CSUSB's 66-58 win, improbably missed both free throws and allowed CPP to draw closer.
And that's what happened.
Nasser, who had been scoreless for the night, found an opening on the left side of the lane and popped an uncontested 12-footer that found nothing but net and CPP led, 56-55.
On CSUSB's trip down the court, Lawrence Tyson put up a shot down low, but was rejected by Rosser, who was fouled. The sophomore from Temecula scored both shots, pushing CPP ahead 58-55 with 44.3 seconds left.
Six seconds later, Fells fouled Corey Caston, who hit just the second of a two-shot foul with 38 seconds left. Swift was fouled on the inbounds play, missed the one-and-one, but CPP freshman
Kevin Ryan was called for the foul on the rebound.
But free throw woes continued for the Coyotes as Devon Davis missed the free throw. Swift was immediately fouled and hit the second of the two-shot foul and CPP led 59-56 with 29 seconds left.
Tyson tried to tie the game, but his 3-pointer was well off the mark.
Mark Rutledge and Rosser each scored a free throw in the next nine seconds and CPP led, 61-56 with 12 seconds left.
Aaron Hill scored a late 3-pointer, but Rosser then closed the game with a pair of free throws with a second left.
The Broncos return to Kellogg Gym on Friday night against Chico State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
