SAN BERNARDINO – What's shaping up as the best Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball season in five seasons took another positive step Tuesday night in the Broncos' resounding 67-56 victory over host Cal State San Bernardino.
Junior guard
Reyana Colson tied her season-high for the third time this season with a game-high 23 points and sophomore
Megan Ford produced her fourth double-double of the season (12 points and 11 rebounds). Add in senior Stephisha Walton's 13 points – her 10th straight game in double figures – and you have the making of something special happening for the Green and Gold.
“We were coming off a tough road trip and gutted out a win against a team that's always difficult to prepare against,'' said head coach Scott Davis of his Broncos, who improved to 14-4 overall and 11-3 in the CCAA. “It's hard to win here and our team shot the ball well.''
The Broncos fired a CCAA-season best 56.3 percent from the floor on 27 of 48 shooting. They took control of the game in the final five minutes of the first half, going on a 13-3 run over the final 4 minutes and 34 seconds.
A 3-pointer from Krystal Urzua cut CPP's lead to 45-40 with 12:31 remaining in the game. But that would be the closest the Coyotes (11-8, 7-7) would get against CPP. The Broncos were in control thereafter, never letting the lead closer than eight points and as large as 13 on two occasions down the final five mintues.
Colson, who surpassed Jackie White for 21st on the all-time Broncos' scoring chart with 1,075 points, finished the game 8-of-12 FGs and 7-of-11 FTs. She also had four steals and dished out two assists.
Ford earned her fourth double-double of the year – all against CCAA foes – and handed out three assists.
Walton also handed out three assists and had four rebounds.
Junior La'kenya Simon-West had nine points off the bench and freshman
Jennifer Bryant scored a career-high six points on two 3-pointers.
Urzua led the Coyotes with 19 points and reserve Amanda Raigins scored 17 points that included a 5-for-6 effort from 3-point land.
The Broncos, who were ranked fifth in the initial NCAA West Regional poll on Jan. 27, take on CCAA rival Chico State on Friday night. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
BRONCO NOTES: Colson now ranks 7th in career FT attempts (478) and 8th in career free throws made (316)… Next up for Colson on the all-time scoring chart is No. 20 Stephanie Coons, who scored 1,086 from 1987-91.
