RIVERSIDE -- Cal Poly Pomona opened the 2010 women's tennis season impressively, defeating Division I and Big West Conference member UC Riverside, 6-3, at the SRC Tennis Complex.
"No question, going on the road and defeating a D-I team on Day One is a credit to our girls,'' Broncos coach Sandy Kriezel said. "We've spent time working on our focus and approach. We had it going today. They've had their way with us in the past, and to earn a win will really help us as we get going into our season. Knowing we can get the job done will help us toward our goals.''
Freshman Christie Lau performed well in her Bronco debut, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles against Donna McCullough. The Broncos won four of six singles matches and won two of three doubles.
Sophomore Jackie Trendt, a first-team All-CCAA player last season, came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 against Nadia Sakhakorn. Two-time All-CCAA Jennifer Chow won at No. 3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 against Angelique Corpuz. And senior Mallory Brady was strong at No. 4, winning 6-3, 6-3 vs. Roxanne Plata.
In doubles play, Chow and Trendt teamed up to defeat Plata and Corpuz (8-6) and Lau and junior Kaitlin Wooldridge defeated Taylor Raney and Natalie McKay at No. 3 (8-6).
The Broncos return to action on Feb. 10 when they host their home opener against Azusa Pacific. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
