Box Score: CPP 65, CSU Stanislaus 32
POMONA – Defense has been a consistent staple for Cal Poly Pomona this season, but what the Broncos accomplished Saturday night in their game against Cal State Stanislaus is down-right astonishing.
The Broncos held the Warriors to just 13 second-half points and walked away with a 65-32 victory before a crowd of 502 at Kellogg Gym.
CSUS's point total is the fewest points scored against a Broncos' team in 31 years; a 30-26 Bronco victory over Cal State Bakersfield in 1978-79.
Junior reserve
Mark Rutledge led the Broncos, winners of seven straight, with 13 points and sophomore
Dwayne Fells added 12 in the 33-point victory, the largest margin of victory for CPP this season. It also is the largest lead that CPP has had against a team this season.
Cal Poly Pomona, who improved to 14-5 overall and 12-4 in the CCAA, never trailed in its game and took control right from the opening tip in the second half. The Broncos hit their first three shots – two layups from
Donnelle Booker and a jumper from Fells – and CPP led 32-19 with 18:27 remaining.
The Broncos safely remained in control and next put together their most impressive run of the game.
Following Tyler Smith's jump shot that made the score 36-25 with 11:44 left, the Broncos outscored the Warriors 15-0 in the next 6 minutes and 22 seconds.
A pair of free throws from Fells, a layup from
Mitchel Anderson and three straight baskets from
Tobias Jahn increased CPP's lead to 47-25 with 7:59 left.
Fells added two more layups and CPP was in cruise control, leading 51-25 with 5:32 left.
Freshman Marcus Lever stopped the dry spell for Cal State Stanislaus. The son of former NBA player Lafayette “Fat” Lever scored on a layup and put the score at 51-27 with 5:20 left.
The Broncos shot 51 percent from the floor – the second straight night CPP shot above the 50-percent mark and puts CPP at 92-9 when they accomplish that feat during the
Greg Kamansky era.
The game also allowed CPP to boost its record to 33-1 when it allows less than 50 points during the Kamansky era.
Frank Monge led CSUS with nine points. The Warriors (9-11, 5-10) were just 11-of-43 from the floor and their 32 points scored is the lowest in school history. Their previous low was 45 scored in a game against Western Washington during the 1972-73 season.
CPP will now face its most arduous road trip of the season when it plays at Humboldt State on Thursday and Sonoma State on Saturday.
BRONCO NOTES: CPP forced more turnovers (12) than field goals (11) scored for CSUS; the fourth time that has occurred this season… All 10 Broncos who dressed scored in the game, including fan-favorite freshman
Shaun Norum, who fired a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left... The Broncos now own a 19-6 lead in the all-time series and have won the last four meetings. It also is the largest margin of victory against the Warriors in those 25 meetings.
