POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona picked up a key West Region victory Wednesday with its 8-1 win over Hawaii Hilo at the Kellogg Tennis Complex.

The Broncos, now 6-3 this season,  grabbed hold of the lead early with two of three wins at doubles, then swept the six singles matches.

"Any time you have second sets better than the first, you know you're getting the job done,'' Broncos coach Sandy Kriezel said. "We're settting ourselves nicely to be in position to play well this week.''

The Broncos face Grand Canyon on Thursday and face CCAA rival Sonoma State on Saturday.

Earning victories in doubles play were: No. 2 Christie Lau and Kaitlin Wooldridge, who remain dominant in 2010. They earned an 8-1 win over Justine Abella and Jenna DeCleene. At No. 3, seniors Fallon Blattner and Jessica Winkler stopped Madison Wells and Kari Rodrigues, 8-1.

Lau and Wooldridge remained unbeaten on the year at 9-0.

Lau's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Christie Pagatpatan pushed her individual record to 7-1. Wooldridge matched the team's best individual record with Lau by winning 6-1, 6-0 over Madison Wells at No. 5.
