POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona took on nonconference foe Grand Canyon in a weekend doubleheader and came away with a split.
The Broncos, now 17-12, are off until Thursday when they'll play host to UC San Diego. CPP and UCSD will play at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday on Scolinos Field before concluding the series Saturday in La Jolla.
Saturday, Game 1: Broncos 7, Grand Canyon 3
The Broncos broke open a 3-3 ballgame with a three-run seventh and went on to earn the series opener.
Jenzen Torres' three-run home run lifted CPP in the key seventh inning. Tied at 3-3 and with two out, CPP slowly got back into the game.
A Tyson Edwards walk and a single by Travis Taijeron set the tone for Torres. The All-CCAA desginated hitter as a freshman blistered a first-pitch offering by J. L. Urlaub.
The home run was Torres' second on the day as he put the Broncos on the scoreboard with a solo shot in the second.
Joshua Krist (3-1) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief. Marcus Makia and Edwards each had two hits and Edwards had a pair of RBI.

Grand Canyon scored three runs in the third, but CPP followed with five run-fifth inning and got going after opening the inning with consecutive strikeouts.
Torres and Makia reached base on a walk and a single, respectively, and McDowell earned a sacrifice fly RBI.
Michael Neff next earned an RBI-single and two batters later, Manny Navarro also had an RBI-single.
Robert Palmer then responded with a two-run double and CPP led 10-6
Torres gave CPP another run when he scored Edwards on a ground out and CPP led 10-6 after five.
The Lopers tied the game with their five-run sixth on just two hits. The big blow was on Garcia's fly ball to center that was dropped and three GCU runners scored.
But CPP plated single runs in both the seventh and eighth and held on for the win.
Taijeron had three RBI and Torres, McDowell and Palmer each had two RBI.
Sunday, Game 4: Grand Canyon 5, Broncos 3
