Broncos' 15-game winning streak ends in CCAA title game

ARCATA
– A 12-0 run to close the final 3 minutes and 26 seconds by Cal State San Bernardino was enough to end Cal Poly Pomona's school-record winning streak.

Tournament MVP Bryan LeDuc hit a pair of 3-pointers in that stretch as the third-seeded Coyotes captured the CCAA Tournament with a 58-52 victory over the Broncos.

LeDuc shared game-high honors with Broncos freshman Mitchel Anderson with 17 points. He also had 12 rebounds.

The Broncos struggled from the outset, hitting just one of their first 10 shots. Reserve Mark Rutledge hit a 3-pointer in that stretch as the Broncos trailed 19-7 with 8:24 left in the first stretch.

That 12-point deficit was CPP's largest it faced since its winning streak started in mid-January at San Francisco State.

But CPP climbed back into the game and cut the lead to four on Anderson's 3-pointer with 21 seconds left and went into halftime trailing 27-23.

A pair of free throws from Anderson gave CPP its first lead at 34-33 with 13:16 left. They maintained control and forged ahead with its largest lead at six twice – once on a free throw from Donnelle Booker with 7:38 left and on Anderson's three that pushed CPP ahead 52-46 with 3:26 left.

That would be it offensively for CPP, now 22-6 overall, as LeDuc hit a pair of free throws and Aaron Hill drained a 3-pointer from the deep left corner that cut the Broncos' lead to 52-51 with 2:29 left.

The Broncos turned the ball over on their next possession, and CSUSB got a break after Hill missed the second of a two-shot foul and Devon Davis got the rebound and scored on the putback.

Booker missed a jumper and LeDuc again stepped up, hitting another 3-pointer from nearly the same spot that Hill hit his and the Coyotes were up 56-52 with 38 seconds left.

Anderson missed on a trey and the Coyotes ended the run on two free throws from Hill.

The loss should not affect CPP's NCAA Tourney hopes as the Coyotes earned the automatic berth by virtue of winning the conference title; their second in as many years.

Anderson's output was a career high and sophomore Dwayne Fells was the only other Bronco to reach double figures with 10.

After CPP's difficult opening effort, it came back to finish 18-of-48 from the floor for 37.5 percent.

Senior Austin Swift and Booker represented the Broncos on the All-Tourney team. They were joined by Brian Morris of Humboldt State and CSUSB's Corey Caston and LeDuc.
