CHICO -- Junior
Tyson Edwards' pinch-hit, 2-run home run over the right-field wall lifted Cal Poly Pomona over No. 14 Chico State 7-5 in 10 innings on Sunday at Nettleton Stadium.
The victory evens the Broncos' CCAA record at 6-6 and 12-9 overall as they prepare for this week's conference series against San Francisco State.
The Broncos earned just one win on the weekend at Chico State and recorded only their second victory over the Wildcats in their last 16 meetings.
The Broncos, who traiiled 4-0 after five innings, came back with two of their first three runs via walks and wild pitches.
They tied the game when Chico State catcher Kyle Leon grabbed a called strike three in the dirt that seemingly ended the game and threw it well over the head of first-baseman Kevin Seaver with two down in the ninth.
Edwards pinch-hit for
Jordan Alcantar and lifted the one-out shot for his second home run of the season.
Senior
Joshua Krist earned the victory in relief of CPP starter
Erick Ruvalcaba. The Petaluma native improved to 2-1 with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Saturday -- Game 1: Chico State 13, Broncos 10
The Broncos took control with a 7-1 in the opener before Chico State scored two runs in the third, two in the fifth and seven in the sixth.
Travis Taijeron and
Manny Navarro each homered for the Broncos and Taijeron finished with three RBI.
Richard McDowell was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Game 2: Chico State 4, Broncos 3
Broncos starter
Geoff Broussard allowed just two hits, one an infield single, through the first three innings. But Aaron Arakawa's two-run homer put the Wildcats ahead 2-1 with his blast over the center-field wall in the fourth.
Broussard responded well and settled in to retire the next seven hitters he faced while Taijeron and
Jenzen Torres hit back-to-back homers to give him a 3-2 lead to work with.
But with one out in the sixth, Michael Murphy and Arakawa answered back. Murphy drew a five-pitch walk and Arakawa ripped off the wall in center field to tie the game. Jackson Evans followed with a single through the right side to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
