POMONA -- The game of baseball is a matter of timely hitting and that hasn't been the case for Cal Poly Pomona in its CCAA series against visiting Cal State Stanislaus.
The Broncos dropped a doubleheader Saturday, losing 13-1 in the opener and 4-2 in the second game as they are now 22-26 overall and 14-21 in the CCAA. The Warriors are 22-22 and 18-17 heading into Sunday's series finale.
The game features the Broncos' 12 seniors in their final home game at CPP. The ceremony will begin at 11:40 a.m. with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
The list of difficulties for CPP is a matter of a lack of offense. In the three games against CSUS, CPP has not had an extra-base hit, scored in only two of 25 innings and standed a total of 22 men on base in the three losses.
Game 1: CSU Stanislaus 13, Broncos 1
The Warriors struck with five runs in the first and followed up with six runs in the second to easily take Saturday's opener.
Broncos' starter
Casey Yokubaitis lasted just an inning a third as he allowed nine hits, nine runs (five earned) and struck out two. The Warriors batted around in each inning and comfortably remained out front.
After freshman reliever
Ryan Dunn gave up a single to to Colton Beatty and a two-run homer to Vince Hungerford, the left-hander from Chino Hills kept the Warriors off the board. He gave up only two hits the remainder of the way and struck out five with one walk.
Hungerford finished just a triple away from the cycle as he went 4-for-5 with five RBI. Beatty had three RBI.
The Broncos'
Jenzen Torres had three singles. They scored their only run in the ninth inning on a passed ball by catcher Seth Hudson.
Starter Andrew Steuve earned the complete-game victory, scattering eight hits with six strikeouts. Only one Bronco reached third base until the ninth inning.
Game 2: CSU Stanislaus 4, Broncos 2
Casey Filkins' two-run double put the Warriors out front and teammate Douglas Porras added a solo home run as the Warriors went on to the sweep.
Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, the Broncos mounted a rally, only to fall short. Torres opened with a walk and
Travis Taijeronreached base on a single.
Marcus Makia put the Broncos on the board with an RBI-single and ended starter Kory Wallace's day.
Reliever Phillip Quade then balked in Torres from third and the Broncos were within two runs.
After
Stephen Gonzalez' single,
Erik Riedel placed a sacrifice bunt that pushed pinch-runner
Joe Villa to second and Makia to third.
But pinch-hitter
Richard McDowell flew out to third and
Robert Palmer struck out to end the game.
Gonzalez was 3-for-3 for CPP.
