LA JOLLA -- It figured that Cal Poly Pomona would be the team that would snap UC San Diego's 65-match California Collegiate Athletic Association women's tennis streak.
But to do it in convincing fashion was shocking.
The Broncos, ranked 25th in the country, began the day taking two of three doubles matches, then poured it on with four singles victories for a 6-3 victory over the 15th-ranked Tritons.
CPP improved to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA as it strengthened its hopes for an NCAA Tourney berth that will be announced later this month.
Freshman
Christie Lau and junior
Kaitlin Wooldridge opened with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and seniors
Fallon Blattner and
Mallory Brady answered with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles for a 2-1 lead through doubles.
Lau maintained her momentum with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Natalie Varnay at No. 1. Brady earned a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Anita Athavale.
Wooldridge earned her second win on the day with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Samantha Young at No. 5.
The clinching win belonged to junior
Jennifer Chow at No. 3. She dropped the first game 2-6 to Valerie Tang, then responded in perhaps the best match of her Broncos career, winning Game 2 6-0 and the deciding third at 6-4.
The Broncos were the last team to defeat UC San Diego, earning the victory on April 19, 2003.
