CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Hernandez competed his Cal Poly Pomona track and field career Friday by finishing 11th in the decathlon at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, hosted by Johnson C. Smith University.

The Moreno Valley native finished with 6,117 points in the two-day, 10-event sport.

Hernandez opened the day in ninth place. His second-day efforts were: 110 hurdles (15.43 seconds, 798 points), discus (117-2, 578), pole vault (12-3 1/2, 549), javelin (140-6, 483) and the  1,500 meters (5:31.70, 391).

Hernandez placed ninth in last year's event.

All-American Jonathan Williams did not reach Saturday's 200-meter finals. The Temecula native, who placed 7th in the 100 last year, ran 21.518 and missed making the finals by three-thousandths of a second.

Friday's event was delayed by rain in the greater Charlotte area.
