LA JOLLA — Cal Poly Pomona's athletic teams finished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioner's Cup for the 2009-10 season, it was announced Thursday at the CCAA's Executive Council Meetings.
“It speaks well of the quality of our student-athletes and coaches,'' said CPP Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Brian Swanson. “We compete in a highly competitive conference where numerous teams have gone on to contend and play for national championships. Our teams had a great 2009-10 and we look forward to building upon that success in the years to come.''
The Broncos captured the CCAA's only team NCAA championship this year in March when the Broncos won the men's basketball title with a 65-53 victory over Indiana, Pa., in Springfield, Mass.
The Commissioner's Cup is presented in association with Apple Computer and is awarded to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight (8) of the CCAA's 13 championship sport offerings. The winning institution receives a laptop computer and glass trophy.
UC San Diego totaled 19 points to finish ahead of Chico State, which finished second with 20 points. It was the closest finish in the five-year history of the program. The previous closest came following the 2007-08 athletics season when the Tritons edged the Wildcats by 2.5 points.
An institution's Commissioner's Cup ranking is calculated using its top two league finishes in the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, as well as the highest two remaining finishes, regardless of season. An institution's numerical finish for team sports is determined by regular season standings, and individual sports finishes are determined by the finishes of the season-ending championship event.
Team sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball and softball. Individual sports are cross country, men's golf and track & field. Institutions winning the conference tournament in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and baseball deduct one point from their regular season finish in those respective sports.
