Head coach Isabelle Harvey enters the 2010 season hoping to ride the momentum her team showed when the 2009 season came to an end.
CPP concluded last season by winning four of its last six games and capped the year with a season-finale 4-3 2OT victory over rival CSU San Bernardino on four-year star Mary Carroll's PK – her fourth goal on the day.
The Broncos (10-10-0 overall and 6-10 CCAA) open the season on Sept. 2 when they play host to nonconference Notre Dame de Namur. They face Dominican on Sept. 4 to conclude its nonconference season and begin CCAA play Sept. 10 at Sonoma State.
“I feel we are moving in the right direction,'' said Harvey, who begins her fifth season at the helm. “Our focus will be taking it one game at a time. We've had a good preseason and I think everyone has stepped up, from the returners to our newcomers.
“This is a team that has great potential to do great things this season. We have everyone working hard and working for each other. That's great to see. It's good to see that our upperclassmen have stepped up to become leaders. That's what winning teams do. That's where we want to be.''
The Broncos return junior All-CCAA F Justine Barclay (Toronto), who scored five goals with one assist on 23 shots last season and went on to win all-region honors.
“I'm excited for Justine,'' Harvey said. “She brings a lot to our attack. It's going to be a good year for her. She can score goals, set up with assists and has good foot work. She's got field presence and a team can feed off those skills.''
Defensively, seniors Britany Garrett (Lakewood), Stephanie Sandino (Diamond Bar) and Miya Quinn (Honolulu) all return. Collectively, that trio has played in a total of 166 games with 130 starts in their careers.
“We've got good experience defensively,'' Harvey said. “Britany is stepping up into a leadership role. She's older and has the experience. Stephanie is consistent and solid and Miya played well last season after transferring from Northern Arizona.''
Other top returning scorers include junior forwards Carrie Rubendall (Concord -- 4 goals/11 pts) and Valerie Strawn (Chino Hills -- 3 goals/8 pts).
Harvey welcomes junior GK Natalia Guevera (Rialto), who two seasons at San Bernardino Valley College. She joins freshman Sarah Rohman (Santee), who served a redshirt season in 2009.
Other returners include sophomore MF Rachel Ulanch (Salt Lake City), junior MF Kailah Martin (Fountain Valley), junior MF Callie Wilson (Riverside), sophomore MF Gloria Gonzalez (Whittier), who served a medical redshirt last season, sophomore F Angela Garcia (Hanford), sophomore MF Dana Catone (Walnut), sophomore D Lauren Skachenko (Chino Hills), sophomore MF Brittany Aldrich (Vista), sophomore MF Tiffany Rogers (La Palma) and junior F Brittney Marteney (West Covina).
Wilson scored a goal and was second on last year's team in assists with four. Martin added a goal with three assists.
Five transfers, three freshmen and one walk-on comprise the 26-member team. They are Guevera, junior F Jennifer Rivera (Hacienda Heights/Mt. SAC), junior D Sara Hanna (San Dimas/Mt. SAC), junior D/F Michelle Nava (Covina/Mt. SAC) and junior MF/F Michelle Arroyo (Lancaster/Taft JC).
The freshmen are: MF Nushin Tasbihchi (Costa Mesa), D Kristin Mihara (Rosemead) and MF/F Melissa Garcia (San Diego). Junior F Tiffany Salazar (El Monte) is the walk-on.
“I'm really pleased as a whole with our team this preseason,'' Harvey said. “We are playing well as a group. They're an energetic bunch that has met our expectations. We're looking forward to beginning the year.''
