ROHNERT PARK
-- For only the second time in school history, Cal Poly Pomona has opened its men's soccer season with three consecutive victories.

And on Friday, the feat was accomplished where success has been hard to come by.

The Broncos' Luis Gonzalez scored a pair of goals and CPP came back to post a 5-3 victory over No. 25 Sonoma State in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams.

The Broncos are now 3-0 for the first time since the 1991 team opened with three consecutive wins. They also captured their first win over the Seawolves since 2003 and their first at SSU since 2002.

The series between the two schools had become a one-sided affair in favor of SSU. The five goals scored by CPP matches the total it had scored in the last seven meetings against the Seawolves.

Gonzalez put the Broncos on the scoreboard in the game's sixth minute. Senior Daniel Gomez sent the ball down the middle and the Long Beach native shot it past Seawolves' GK Juan Sosa.

SSU answered with two goals inside a five-minute span, but Gonzalez put CPP back out front at the 28th minute. Teammate Juan Mejia worked the ball to Gonzalez, who then went one-on-one with Sosa and beat him with a shot to the left side of the net.

Then, senior defender Justin Valashinas scored his first goal of his CPP career just three minutes later. Gonzalez worked the ball to the Manhattan Beach native, who one timed it past Sosa's right side.

At the 37-minute mark, junior Anthony Salcedo earned a through ball from Gomez and dribbled it past the GK on a soft finish.

SSU's Trevor Hurst cut CPP's lead to 4-3 just 42 seconds later and the teams went into halftime at 4-3, CPP.

The teams battled hard on an 80-degree day. CPP had 29 fouls to SSU's 14 and a total of eight yellow cards were handed out.

Junior Wuta Beta capped the day with the second-half's only goal. At the 87th minute, the Fresno native earned a through ball from junior Tyler Reinhart and popped to the left corner for the final tally on the day.

Junior Tony Iniguez came on to replace starter Andrew Todd at goal keeper in the second half. He earned the win with four saves.

CPP completes the weekend with a game at Humboldt State on Sunday. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
