Box Score: Broncos 3, Simon Fraser 1
POMONA – On Thursday night, Simon Fraser University played its first collegiate match as a member of the NCAA. The Canadian university based in suburban Vancouver ran into a program that has made a name for itself under the direction of 19-year head coach
Rosie Wegrich.
Wegrich's Cal Poly Pomona Broncos vollyeball team opened the 2010 season with a sound 3-1 victory over the visiting Clan as play got underway in the Cal Poly Pomona/Cal State L.A. Labor Day tournament.
Junior
Kristin McNeese led the Broncos in their season opener with 14 kills and an attack percentage of .296 (14/6/27). She also led the team in service aces with seven as CPP won the match by a score of 25-14, 26-24, 25-27, 25-18 before a crowd of 178 at Darlene May Gym.
The Broncos took command in Game 1 after taking the lead for good at 3-2. CPP fired a collective .312 in that game as McNeese and freshman
Jessica Doerner had three kills apiece.
Leading 24-20 in Game 2, the Clan came back on kills from KJ Fridfinnson and Jennifer Neilson, then followed with a pair of service aces from Jordan Drezet.
But a service error put CPP out front 25-24 and McNeese finished off the game with a kill for a 2-0 CPP lead.
In Game 3, CPP built what seemed to be a comfortable 18-8 lead when sophomore
Diana Lake fired a kill. But SFU rallied on a 17-7 run and earned the game-winner on a kill from Marina Liarsky.
The Broncos fought back in Game 4 and went on to win with strong play from McNeese and sophomores
Lindsey Poulos and
Taylr Kreutziger. McNeese had three kills for the game and the two sophomores combined for four kills.
Lake had 12 digs for the match lead, while Poulos had five block assists – tops in that category for the night.
CPP returns to Darlene May Gym at 11 a.m. Friday when it plays host to Academy of Art. They close the day with a 7 p.m. match against Dixie State of St. George, Utah.
