POMONA
-- A valiant effort from Cal Poly Pomona came up just short in a 5-game loss to visiting Northwood in nonconference volleyball play Saturday night at Darlene May Gym.

Freshman Jessica Doerner led the Broncos with 17 kills and the Broncos had a collective 20 block assists, but the Timberwolves came out on top 20-25, 26-24, 25-13, 20-25, 15-13.

CPP, now 2-2 overall, will begin conference play this week when it plays host to San Francisco State on Friday night.

In an evenly played match throughout the night, Northwood came up in Game 5 after trailing 10-8. The Timberwolves fired off four straight points -- on two kills, a CPP attack error and a service ace by Sladjana Mitrovic.

After a CPP timeout, Kristin McNeese offered a kill to bring the Broncos to within one at 12-11 Northwood.

After a service error from CPP's Diana Lake, the Broncos again drew within a point at 13-12 on a NU attack error.

After Doerner had an attack error that put NU at game and match point, she redeemed herself with a kill to cut NU's lead to 14-13. But Sara Skornia threw down a kill and finished the match.

The Broncos trailed in the match 2-1 and fought back with an impressive Game 4 win.

After the game was tied for the fifth time at 16 apiece, the Broncos pulled ahead with Lake serving. Two kills from Doerner, an NU bad set and a kill from sophomore Taylr Kreutziger

Leading 20-16, the Broncos stayed in front and eventually won on two straight attack errors from Mitrovic.

McNeese and Lake each had 11 kills for CPP. Kreutziger had six block assist and one solo block.
