POMONA, Calif. - Behind a strong defensive team effort, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, 52-37, in front of a raucous Kellogg Gym crowd of 887.
The Broncos forced 21 Warrior turnovers and despite only having one player in double figures,
Dwayne Fells with 10, the host CPP squad showed itself as the top-notch defensive unit that Pomona fans have become accustomed to seeing.
After holding the Warriors without a successful field goal from the 16:38 and 5:45 marks in the second half, the Broncos had little trouble putting the contest out of reach.
CPP improves to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSUS falls to 5-8 overall and 3-6 through conference play.
Fells, who entered the contest as the 11th-rated field-goal shooter in the nation for Division II, went 5-for-6 from the floor Friday and added four rebounds.
Mitchel Anderson contributed a solid all-around evening, tallying eight points, nine rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Both squads shot poorly in the first half, with the Broncos connecting on 30.4 percent of their shots and the Warriors firing at just 19.2. The two teams went into halftime locked at 17 points apiece.
Holding CSUS to under 40 points might seem familiar for CPP, as the Broncos collected a 65-32 win on Feb. 6, 2010, over the Warriors, marking the last occurrence of keeping an opponent below 40.
Making his return to the lineup for CPP was senior
Tobias Jahn, who totaled seven points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals on the evening.
The Broncos got the crowd into it early, with Anderson knocking down a trey to start the scoring at the 19:13 mark and then Fells sinking a layup that stretched the lead to 5-0 at 17:21.
CSUS rallied for an 8-0 run late in the half though, turning a 13-9 deficit into a 17-13 advantage for the Warriors. That stretch featured a three-pointer from Dan Daviess.
Back-to-back layups from Fells and Jahn pulled the Broncos back to even heading into halftime.
Mark Rutledge gave CPP a boost early in the second period, connecting on his first eight points of the contest during the opening five minutes after the break. The Warriors managed to cut the lead back to 23-22 at the 16:38 mark but after that point, the Broncos took control.
CPP outscored CSUS 29-15 the rest of the way, with Rutledge's eight points leading the Broncos during the second half.
The lead for CPP reached as high as 18 on two different occasions, when Anderson knocked down a free throw at 3:52 and when
Kevin Menner hit an attempt at the strike with 2:43 left in the game.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Chico State Saturday. The Wildcats suffered a 75-61 loss Saturday at Cal State San Bernardino, as CSUC fell to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA.
