Box Score

POMONA, Calif. -
Dwayne Fells collected 20 points Saturday, helping the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team capture an 82-68 home victory over Chico State.

It marked the second-straight win for the Broncos, who improve to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats drop to 9-5 overall and 5-5 through conference play.

Fells, establishing himself as one of the premier post players in the CCAA, has registered double-digit point totals in nine of the 12 contests so far this season. He also added eight rebounds and five assists Saturday, while going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Playing in front of another loud Kellogg Gym crowd, the Broncos jumped on the visiting CSUC squad and the hosts took a 40-21 lead into halftime.

After a 6-6 tie with just about five minutes gone, CPP embarked on a 7-0 run that featured back-to-back buckets from Donnelle Booker. The stretch was capped off with a layup by Tobias Jahn, who has come back strong from injuries and finished with seven points, two steals and two blocks Saturday.

Fells finished perfect in the first half, netting 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field and an opening 4-for-4 run at the strike. The CPP advantage shot as high as 23, with the score 38-15 with 1:20 left in the period, after the CSUC bench was whistled for a technical and Mark Rutledge sunk the consequent free throws.

A desperation trey from halfcourt at the buzzer by Jay Flores cut the lead under 20, at 40-21.

Moving into the second period, the Broncos were able to maintain their advantage through much of the remainder. Terrence Drisdom, who didn't register a point in the first 20 minutes of action, ended up tallying 15 during the closing half.

A layup from Rutledge at the 3:25 mark put CPP ahead 73-51 but a stretch of three-pointers from the Wildcats made the contest a bit more interesting. Consecutive treys from Flores and Sean Park brought the lead down to 74-62 and CSUC cut it down as close as 10 when Roderick Hawkins dropped in a layup with 1:24 to play.

The Wildcats' rally proved to be too little and too late, as the Broncos controlled the clock and sunk their final six free throws, four coming from Drisdom and two by Fells.

The CSUC attack was led by Hawkins Saturday, as he totaled 22 points and added nine rebounds. Terrence Pellum put together a solid all-around night for the Wildcats, finishing with nine points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Up next for the Broncos will be a 7:30 p.m. matchup Tuesday at home against Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes continue to roll, having won their third-straight Saturday to improve to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in CCAA action. Tuesday's contest will be featured as part of "Pack the Gym" for CPP fans.
