SAN FRANCISCO -
The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a tough 68-66 loss Saturday at San Francisco State. The Broncos had a chance to tie the game at the final buzzer but a halfcourt attempt from Dwayne Fells hit the bottom of the backboard, allowing the Gators to escape with the two-point decision.

The Broncos fall to 10-7 overall and 7-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while SFSU improves to 12-6 overall and 10-4 through conference action.

Fells and Mitchel Anderson ended up pacing CPP in points with 18 apiece. Tobias Jahn totaled 15 points  while adding six rebounds in a season-high 36 minutes played. The big strikes for the Gators came from Phoenix O'Rourke, who hit five treys en route to 15 points. Overall though the SFSU offense was paced by a 22-point performance by Nefi Perdomo.

The visiting Bronco squad jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first half with the run being capped by a Mark Rutledge three-pointer. CPP maintained a steady lead through the first seven minutes of the contest but SFSU was able to take control in the later stages of the period, pulling ahead by as many as seven after an O'Rourke trey at the 6:56 mark.

The Gators took a seven-point advantage into halftime after a 7-0 run, which featured back-to-back buckets from Perdomo.

CPP chipped away early in the second period, bringing the score even at 46-46 when Anderson sunk a three-pointer with 13:32 to play in regulation.

The host SFSU team managed to pull back ahead by 11 with 6:32 left on the clock, putting a possible Broncos' comeback in doubt. CPP didn't back down though and slowly pulled to within striking distance.

Down 68-66 with three seconds on the clock, the Broncos got a defensive board after Perdomo free throw miss. A last-chance heave from Fells landed just short of the rim, as the Gators walked away with the narrow victory.

CPP finished the contest with a 45.8-percent performance from the field, while SFSU fired at a 51.2-percent clip. The Broncos went 19-for-26 at the free throw line, with the resulting 73.1-percent mark ranking as the third-best performance for CPP this season in that category.  Kevin Menner led the Broncos from the strike, going 7-for-8 with all of the attempts coming during the opening half.

CPP falls back into sixth place with the loss and up next, the Broncos will host fifth-place Cal State L.A. on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to start a four-game homestand.
