CARSON, Calif. - Behind a 14-kill performance from
Kristin McNeese and a strong attacking night by
Lauren Jones as well, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday, 3-1, for the team's third-straight victory.
Simply enough, the Broncos put together a much better offensive showing than the Toros as CPP hit .231 to the host's .176. McNeese and
Taylr Kreutziger finished as the two Broncos in double figures with kills at 14 and 10 respectively, while Jones and
Courtney Alberi posted spectacular hitting percentages of .636 and .462.
WIth the win, CPP moves above the .500 overall mark at 7-6 while carrying a 4-5 record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUDH, still winless in league action, sits at 1-12 overall and 0-9 through conference play.
The Broncos never trailed in the opening set, despite the Toros keeping the score fairly close. McNeese got off to a stellar start, recording six kills in that frame while hitting .750. Jones and Kreutziger contributed one service ace apiece in that span as well, with CPP taking the 25-20 decision.
The second set played out in a very similar fashion and the Broncos' attack even got a bit stronger, posting a hitting percentage of .405 in that portion of the match. It proved to be a more balanced attack as well, as
Jessica Doerner, McNeese, Kreutziger and Alberi all totaled four or more kills.
The Toros played better in the third frame while the two team went back and forth exchanging the lead, while the score was tied on 14 different occasions. With the scoreboard reading 20-20 at one point, CSUDH's Elizabeth Krieger helped the hosts capture the 25-23 result by knocking in two kills during that stretch. Krieger finished with a match-high 19 kills.
CPP didn't waver in the fourth, staking a 12-6 advantage to steal back the momentum.
Katie Colin played well in that frame for the Broncos, collecting six assists and two service aces. Jones added thee of her seven kills during that set to help CPP close out the 3-1 victory.
The Broncos will finish the week with a 4:30 p.m. match Sunday against San Francisco State at Darlene May Gym. With a victory, CPP could tie the Gators of SFSU for sixth place in the conference standings.
