POMONA, Calif. - Two goals in the first five minutes and another at the 13:40 mark allowed the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team to cruise to a 3-0 home victory against Cal State Stanislaus Friday.
The Broncos mantain top billing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), holding marks of 9-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in league action. The visiting Warriors drop to 8-4-1 overall and 6-4-1 in conference play.
CCAA points leader
Luis Gonzalez got the CPP offense going in the third minute, lining a close-range shot in the far corner of the net after receiving a pass from
Ricardo Reyes. It marked the 12th score of the 2011 season for Gonzalez, matching his total from last year.
Less than two minutes later, Reyes picked a goal of his own as a beneficiary of nice passing by
Juan Mejia and
Fabian Perez.
In the 14th minute, the Broncos struck for their third and final score of the match. This time it was Enns, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, getting on the board. A long outlet pass from goalkeeper
Kris Minton allowed Enns to charge up the left sideline. Moving past a defender into the box, Enns sent a hard and nicely-placed shot off the inside of the post before it rolled across the line.
After the tremendous start, the CPP squad settled into a game of possession the rest of the match to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard. Minton and
Andrew Todd combined to give the Broncos a solid effort in net. The starter, Minton, had to be replaced in the 54th minute following an injury.
With Enns' score, he improves his season total to six, one more than the amount he collected last season. Despite the Warriors gaining four corner kicks to CPP's two and only getting outshot by two attempts, the visiting CSUS squad struggled to put serious pressure on the Broncos' netminders. Nolan Holdridge led the Warriors with three shots while putting two on target.
Up next for CPP will be a Sunday meeting with Chico State. It will be the final regular season home contest for the Broncos and Senior Day festivities is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The visiting Wildcats sit in second place with marks of 7-3-3 overall and 6-3-2 in CCAA action after a 1-0 defeat of San Francisco State Friday.
CPP's annual Pumpkin Festival is taking place this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and Oct. 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm Store, which is across the street from Kellogg Field and parking lots K and B. Because of the large crowds expected, fans going to Sunday's Senior Day ceremony are encouraged to arrive early.
To avoid parking in lots K and B, another alternative is to park in the garage structure toward the opposite side of campus and then walking south to Kellogg Field. To find the parking structure on Google Maps, type in this address: Oak Ln & Red Gum Ln, Pomona, CA.
