POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team gave No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino its toughest test so far in the 2011 season Friday night at Kellogg Gym, as the Broncos took the first set from the visiting Coyotes. A narrow fourth frame nearly sent the match into a deciding set but CSUSB prevailed, 3-1, behind an 11-block night from the team.
CPP managed to capture a win in the first set, with the hosts getting a five-kill contribution in that frame from
Kristin McNeese while she added two service aces in that span as well. It marked the first time this year that the undefeated Coyotes had dropped the opening set.
In the end though, CSUSB managed to keep its records unscathed at 17-0 overall and 12-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Broncos fall to 9-8 overall and 6-7 in league action.
The fans at Kellogg Gym were treated to an entertaining match, especially in the first and fourth sets. In fact, the opening frame featured 14 tie scores and five lead changes. The Coyotes served with a set point at 24-23 but a kill by
Jessica Doerner off a
Katie Colin assist tied the score at 24-24.
Camille Smith came back with a push kill to regain the CSUSB edge but CPP bounced back to even the score 25-25 after a McNeese kill. A service ace from McNeese before a solo block from
Taylr Kreutziger lifted the Broncos to the upset 27-25 decision in the first.
The Coyotes stole the momentum back in the second set, racing out to a 6-2 lead with reigning National Player of the Year Samantha Middleborn contributing two kills in that span en route to 13 on the night overall. The Broncos called a timeout at that point and then managed to pull within two at 9-7. CSUSB rallied for nine of the next 11 points though to cruise to the 25-15 set two result.
After hitting .458 in the second frame to rebound from a .257 performance in the first, the Coyotes continued to hit well in the third. All night though, the Broncos scrambled and dug out strong attacks to make it an exciting contest. CPP trailed 6-1 in the third set but scrambled back to make it a three-point lead at 18-15 in favor of CSUSB. Danielle Newcombe helped the visiting Coyotes capture the 25-18 decision with two kills in the final seven points.
Strong play from
Lauren Jones and
Taylr Kreutziger in the fourth helped CPP threaten to force a fifth set. The Broncos jumped out to a 7-4 advantage to force CSUSB to call a timeout. That spurred a 7-2 run for the Coyotes, who were helped by a pair of CPP attack errors. The Broncos didn't back down though, even pulling to within 21-20 after an ace from
Kelly Bonja, who totaled a team-high 14 digs Friday. In the end though, a Middleborn kill put CPP away with the 25-22 score in the fourth.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 7 p.m. matchup Saturday against UC San Diego at Kellogg Gym.
