POMONA, Calif. - For the second-straight night, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team came close to forcing a fifth set against a nationally-ranked opponent. In the end though the result was the same, with the Broncos dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 18 UC San Diego Saturday at Kellogg Gym.
Although CPP started slow Saturday, the Bronco fans have certainly seen a much improved team on the floor this week. After falling behind 2-0 to UCSD, CPP battled back to take the third set by a score of 25-16. A fiercly-contest fourth went to the visiting Tritons, wrapping up the 3-1 result.
The Broncos fall to 9-9 overall and 6-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while UCSD improves to 13-4 overall and 9-4 through conference play. Highlighting the CPP performance Saturday were
Diana Lake picking up 19 digs, the most for the Broncos in a four-set match all year, and
Katie Colin racking up 37 assists, her highest total so far in October.
Roxanne Brunsting helped UCSD jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, notching a service ace and a kill in that spurt. A couple of Triton attack errors paired with a strong kill from
Kristin McNeese enabled CPP to chip away at the margin.
A 7-0 run allowed UCSD to regain control of the opening frame, with the rally finally stopped by a
Jessica Doerner kill for the Broncos. The teams traded points the rest of the way, leaving the visiting Tritons with a 25-19 first set win.
CPP's Lake opened the second set with authority, lining a kill from the left side after receiving a nice set from Colin. The Tritons managed to capture nine of the next 11 points, forcing the Broncos to call a timeout with the score at 9-3. The run continued three more points, until freshmen
Lauren Jones and
Kirsten Rutledge combined for a block to regain serve.
Despite the large lead in set two, CPP continued to put up strong attacks. Still, the visiting UCSD squad scrambled and dug to continue to build up an advantage. The Broncos showed their fight late in set two though, reeling off a 6-0 run behind strong serving by Colin to force attack errors on the Tritons. UCSD closed it out in the end, winning 25-17.
CPP didn't back down from the challenge though in the fourth and once the Broncos gained a 9-8 lead after a Triton service error, the hosts didn't give up the advantage the rest of the way. Lake collected four kills and eight digs in the frame, while
Karissa Lagmay closed it out with back-to-back kills to help CPP get the 25-16 result.
Similarly to the third, the fourth set featured numerous tie scores and lead changes. The Broncos took their first lead of the frame at 16-15, after
Taylr Kreutziger and Rutledge combined for a block that led the Tritons to call a timeout. Brunsting powered UCSD to victory though, totaling three kills, a block assist and a set assist in the final nine points to lead the Tritons to the 25-20 decision.
Up next, the Broncos will compete in a non-conference match at Cal Baptist on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lancers stand at 10-8 overall.
