POMONA, Calif. - For the second-straight match, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead into the final minutes of regulation. Unfortunately a similar result of Friday also took place Sunday, as visiting Chico State rallied for a 2-1 comeback victory.
The Broncos fall to 7-4-3 overall and 5-4-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Wildcats improve to 6-5-3 overall and 6-4-2 through conference play.
Although CPP now stands in eighth place overall for the conference, the Broncos are just three points - equating to one win - out of the fourth spot that would grant the team a berth into the CCAA tournament in early November. Four regular season matches remaining, with the next one on Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4:30 p.m.
Prior to the contest, the Broncos honored 10 student-athletes for Senior Day. On CPP's scoring play in the seventh minute, it was two Bronco seniors combining for the goal.
Maria-Christine Arroyo slipped a pass up the right side to
Christina Carriaga, who lined a hard shot past CSUC goalkeeper Brianna Furner to put CPP ahead, 1-0.
Although the Wildcats outshot the Broncos 9-2 in the first half, the CPP defense was able to hold off the visitors' chances. Sophomore netminder
Sarah Rohman ended totaling five saves on the afternoon.
Early in the second half, Rohman got some key help from one of her defenders to keep the score at 1-0. After the Wildcats' Danielle Leiva crossed a ball into the box, teammate Megan Tabler lined a shot past Rohman for what seemed to be the equalizer. Broncos' defender
Kristin Mihara sprinted toward the end line though, clearing the ball just in time.
Leiva did help get the actual equalizer though, taking the initial shot in the 89th minute before Denni Jo Berger knocked in the rebound chance to tie the score at 1-1 with just 1:21 remaining in regulation.
Less than four minutes into the first overtime, the Wildcats earned a corner kick opportunity from the right side. Molly Downtain placed a shot off the crossbar and then Lisa Webster collected the rebound and put a sliding shot across the line for the game-winning score.
Justine Barclay ended up leading the host Broncos in shots with four.
