RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss Tuesday at Cal Baptist, a local challenger out of the Pacific West Conference.
The result drops the Broncos below .500 overall on the season, at 9-10. CPP carries a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) mark of 6-8 into Friday's home contest against Chico State. That night, with first serve set for 7 p.m. at Kellogg Gym, will be a "Think Pink: Dig for the Cure" event and fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.
Errors on the attack and on the serve were at the root of the Broncos' troubles Tuesday, as CPP managed a hitting percentage of just .063. Eight service errors overshadowed the team's two aces.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 7-3 advantage in the first game with three early kills from
Kristin McNeese, who finished with a team-high 10 while adding eight digs. CPP even held a 15-12 lead but the host Lancers rallied to win 13 of the final 16 points of the game to take the 25-18 decision.
The second game proved to be the most tightly contested. The Broncos managed to outlast three game points for CBU but in the end, the Lancers called a timeout down 27-26 and then reeled off three-straight points with a Jessica Kalama kill and two CPP attack errors to wrap up the dramatic 29-27 win.
The momentum from the narrow second game seemed to continue into the third, as CBU cruised to a 25-11 result to close out the sweep. Jelena Dragovic led the Lancers' attack with 12 kills on a .750 hitting percentage.
Kelly Bonja paced the Broncos in digs with 11 but the defensive effort for the Broncos couldn't outweight the errors committed. CBU, currently ranked sixth in the PacWest standings, improved to 13-8 overall with the victory.
