POMONA, Calif. - The label of 'division leader' was on the line Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field where the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team was defeated by Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1, in a game that was decided in the final three minutes of double overtime.
The Broncos fall to 6-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play and are tied with the Toros (7-2-1, 5-2-1 CCAA) for the South Division lead.
A 90-minute span of consistent tripping and deflecting was succeeded by over 17 more of unending tension and frustration.
The frustration turned to triumph for the Toros and heartbreak for the Broncos at the 107:18 mark, when freshman forward Connor Brandt tapped the ball into the left side of the goal to end the game.
Aggression and rough physicality characterized the playing style of both teams throughout the game as the referees dealt six yellow cards including four for the Toros and two for the Broncos. But it was a CPP first-half yellow card off a hand ball that proved costly.
Though sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Todd's dive to the left deflected senior defender Billy Gutierrez's penalty kick away from the goal, the rebound by freshman midfielder Henry Calistro gave the Toros a 1-0 advantage.
CSUDH carried the momentum from the goal into the second half getting five shots off in the opening 10 minutes, including two on goal. Following an offsides call on the Toros, however, the momentum shifted and the reignited CPP offense set its sight on evening the score.
In the 62nd minute, Broncos senior midfielder
Fabian Perez connected with senior midfielder
Luis Gonzalez, who proceeded to shoot the ball past senior goalkeeper Markus Dickerson and into the net for the equalizer.
The Toros won the shot contest, 25-16, while the Broncos had more saves. Todd had seven saves for the Broncos while Dickerson had three.
The Broncos travel to Seaside on Friday to take on the North Division's fourth-place Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (4-4-1, 4-3-1 CCAA) before returning home for to begin their final homestand of the season against the South Division's fifth-place San Francisco State (4-4-2, 3-4-1 CCAA). Kickoff for each game is at 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
