POMONA, Calif. - Serving as a worthy sequel to the double-overtime men's game earlier in the day at Kellogg Field, the Sunday afternoon showdown between the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team and the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills ended with the teams locked in a 2-2 draw.
With the tie, the Broncos are now 5-2-3 overall and 3-2-3 against conference teams to occupy fourth place in the South Division. The Toros (5-4-1, 3-4-1) remain in fifth.
The match came down to a battle of will power that included one lead change and two ties.
Facing a 2-1 deficit and the scoring abilities of senior forward Jessica Murphy, Broncos senior forward
Valerie Strawn ripped a ball that deflected off the hands of junior goalkeeper Marissa Graska. With Graska on her knees, limiting her movement, junior midfielder
Cindy Paez kicked the rebound into the net to even the score, 2-2, in the 71st minute.
The goal was the answer to a Toros' goal occurring two minutes into the second half, in which Murphy headed junior forward Niki Poole's throw-in toward CPP sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman's direction. What first appeared to be another shot saved by Rohman actually took an unusual bounce that rolled into the back of the net to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.
Long-range shots and even longer passes were prevalent in the opening half as both teams utilized all parts of the field in order to make the most of their goal-scoring chances.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the third minute when senior forward
Valerie Strawn received senior midfielder
Jennifer Rivera's corner kick and shot from the far-right post to the right of junior goalkeeper Marissa Graska.
Down a goal, the CSUDH offense responded with more aggression and closed the deficit in the 22nd minute. Receiving senior midfielder Taylor Canatsey's cross pass from the right, Murphy launched the ball off her left foot and into the area below the part of the crossbar she hit minutes before to put the Toros on the board.
CPP was outshot by the Toros in the game, 33-19, while Rohman had 14 saves to Graska's nine.
The Broncos go on the road to play the North Divsion's fifth-place Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (2-7, 1-7) on Friday and return home for the first of three games, representing their final homestand of the 2011 season, against the South Division's third-place San Francisco State (6-3-1, 4-3-1). Both games kickoff at 2 p.m.
