POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team stopped San Francisco State's five match winning streak, three sets to one, at Darlene May Gym Sunday afternoon.
With the result, the Broncos (8-6, 5-5) have won four-straight contests and move into a tie for sixth place with the Gators (9-6, 5-5) in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
CPP pulled away fast and early in game one to lead 9-3. The Gators couldn't stop the Broncos momentum and freshman outside hitter
Kirsten Rutledge's eight service points, as CPP continued to pull away with junior outside hitter
Diana Lake putting away the game winner to overcome SFSU 25-22.
SFSU put on their game faces in the second set to start out with an early lead of 6-2. The Broncos nearly caught up and the double block of junior middle blocker
Taylr Kreutziger and sophomore right side hitter
Jessica Doerner produced three points in a row to bring the score to 21-19. It just wasn't enough to win the game as the Broncos lost the second frame 25-22.
Game three started out similar to game two as the Gators led early in the game, but with a kill from the back row from senior right side hitter
Kristin McNeese, the Broncos started their five point streak to lead 9-4. Although SFSU fought back, it wasn't enough to take the lead as CPP takes game three 25-22.
Going into the fourth set the Gators and the Broncos went point for point most of the game. In the middle of all the action, Kreutziger put away a quick set in the middle but SFSU answered right back with the same set and kill to make the score 13-9.
As the Gators thought they're about to pull away, the Broncos came back to tie the score, 19-19. CPP and SFSU continued their fight as they went point for point with multiple kills from McNeese. It was Kreutziger's game though at the end as she put away a crucial kill and put up a solo block to help the Broncos win 28-26.
CPP outhit SFSU .254 to .187 with a total of 138 attack attempts compared to the Gators' 155. The Broncos also had a total of 42 assists and 61 digs throughout the match.
The Broncos hosts Sonoma State on Friday with the first serve set for 7 p.m. at Darlene May Gym.
