CARSON, Calif. - A wild game Friday with plenty of fireworks on offense ended in another tough loss for the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team, as the Broncos fell 4-3 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
CPP got on the scoreboard first at the 13:03 mark but the Toros rallied back for two scores over the next four minutes, marking the second of four lead changes through the match. The host CSUDH squad fought back from a 3-2 halftime deficit to capture the narrow 4-3 win.
The result marks the Broncos' third-straight loss, dropping to 7-6-3 overall and 5-6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). It also put a blemish on CPP's previously undefeated road record, which now stands at 2-1-1. The Toros improve to 7-7-1 overall and 5-7-1 through conference play.
Senior
Christina Carriaga gave the Broncos an early 1-0 lead at the 13:03 mark, beating CSUDH keeper Tiffany Hollis to a ball and slipping a shot into the open net. Just 34 seconds later, the Toros tied it with Niki Poole firing a shot inside the near post past CPP netminder
Sarah Rohman to even the score.
The CSUDH attack tacked on another score in the 17th minute when Yadira Gomez knocked in a goal to put the hosts up 2-1. The first-half scoring didn't end there, as Broncos' senior
Valerie Strawn spun at the top of the box and lifted a shot over the keeper at the near post to push the score to 2-2.
The momentum continued to shift and CPP rallied for another goal at the 38:30 mark with freshman
Aneska Alino lining a shot inside the near post, off a Toros' defender and to the back of the net to give the Broncos a 3-2 lead heading into intermission.
The CPP offense fell silent in the second half though, as CSUDH rallied for two unanswered scores from Jessica Murphy and Sami Feintein to pull ahead 4-3. The Toros held off the Broncos to wrap up the one-goal victory.
Up next, CPP will challenge Cal State L.A. on Sunday in a 2 p.m. road match.
