POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team earned a chance to send the match into a fourth game Friday but the visiting Chico State squad took three-straight points to conclude a 3-0 sweep at Kellogg Gym.
The Broncos fall to 9-11 overall and 6-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Wildcats improve to marks of 15-5 overall and 10-4 through conference action. Friday's result was the fourth-straight loss for the Broncos.
Late in the first game of Friday's match, CPP freshman
Lauren Jones connected with a kill on a
Jamie Kidd assist to tie the score at 18-18. Then, the Wildcats rallied for five-straight points with three of them coming from Alex Shurtz attacks.
Kristin McNeese stopped the CSUC run with a kill to the deep right corner of the net.
A pair of Wildcats' attack errors followed, forcing the visiting coaching staff to call a timeout with a narrow 23-21 lead. Out of the timeout, a Jones' service error gave CSUC the serve with a 24-21 game point.
An attack error on the Wildcats prolonged the game one more point but Jessica Leek contributed a kill to give CSUC a 25-22 winning result.
The Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 advantage to start the second frame on
Karissa Lagmay serving, while McNeese and Taylor Kreutziger capped off the run with a combined block. The visiting Wildcats managed to reel off 11 of the next 14 points though to establish an 11-7 lead.
CSUC continued to build up the margin, helped in part by back-to-back service aces from Lauren Orozco. Despite kills from
Courtney Alberi and McNeese allowing CPP escape three game points, the Wildcats ended up with a 25-15 result.
The host Broncos held a lead of their own through much of the third game but a Shurtz kill pushed the score into a 19-19 tie and then another CSUC point forced CPP to call a timeout.
Lagmay helped the Broncos rally, firing a kill to tie the game at 20-20 and then knocking in a service ace to give CPP a 21-20 lead. The teams continued to trade points, with the score moving to 23-23 before
Kirsten Rutledge stepped up to serve for the Broncos.
A long rally ensued before the Wildcats' Makenzie Snyder slammed an attack out of bounds to give CPP a game point. The visitors scratched together three-straight points to pull out the 3-0 victory. As a team, CSUC put up 10 blocks and landed seven service aces on the night.
Up next, the Broncos host Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday at Kellogg Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
