LOS ANGELES - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team fought nationally-ranked Cal State L.A. to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, using a second-half score from senior Jennifer Rivera to even the tally.

The Broncos stand at 5-5-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, while the Golden Eagles hold a mark of 8-3-3. The visitors needed three points to stay in contention for the conference tournament to be held in early November.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Emily Miller put together a solid performance Sunday for CPP, registering nine saves, including several key stops late in regulation and through overtime.

Despite dominating the first half of play, the Broncos fell into a 1-0 deficit after CSULA's Gabbi Segall struck for a goal in the sixth minute. Receiving a cross from teammate Janet Mendez, Segall tapped in a one-timer at the front post to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.

Senior forward Valerie Strawn helped apply plenty of pressure on the CSULA defense, recording shots on goal at the 12:22 and 41:41 marks. Both of those attempts were stopped though by Golden Eagles' netminder Jessie Walworth.

While the hosts held the 1-0 advantage at halftime, the Broncos had put four shots on goal to CSULA's one.

CPP put together one of its best chances in the 59th minute, with Kristin Mihara switching field on a pass to her right for Miko Elliott. After a few dribbles, Elliott lofted a pass into the box for Melissa Garcia. Off one bounce, Garcia fired a shot just over the crossbar from 10 yards away.

The Golden Eagles came close to pushing their lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute as Maddi Meighan sent a hard shot from 12 yards out toward right side of the net. Miller made an impressive stop though, diving to her left to deflect the ball away.

The Broncos broke through for the equalizer at the 67:40 mark, when Strawn sent a cross into the box. A CSULA defender tried to head the ball away but instead it went to Rivera. After settling it on the ground, Rivera lined a shot inside the far post.

The teams went up and down the field putting exciting scoring chances together during the final stretch of regulation and with the clock ticking just under a minute, Strawn sent a pass from the left corner over to Callie Wilson above the top corner of the box. Aiming above the keeper's head, Wilson ripped a shot that was pulled down by Walworth.

The match moved into overtime and midway through the first of the extra periods, CSULA's Norie Pablo received a pass in the box after a pair of slick moves from her teammates. Driving a shot toward the inside of the left post, Pablo's attempt was stopped by Miller sliding to her right.

The Broncos earned a chance of their own with about two minutes remaining in the same period, as Christina Carriaga dribbled almost half the length of the field up the left side and then split two defenders into the box. Walworth made a nice play coming out of the goal area though, controlling a sliding shot from Carriaga.

Despite the Golden Eagles placing many crosses in the goalmouth area in the second overtime, the Broncos' defense held tough for the 1-1 result.

Up next, CPP will travel to play Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
