POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team put Friday's tough loss against Sonoma State behind it by sweeping the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State 3-0 Saturday night in Darlene May Gym.
The Broncos started slow as the Jacks took an early lead of 6-0 in the first game. CPP got right back into it as
Taylr Kreutziger served for six points to bring the score to 14-9. As the first game continued the rallies got longer. HSU took a late lead of 21-19.
A crucial kill from Kreutziger and a service ace by
Diana Lake resulted in an even score of 21-21. After three consecutive kills by the Broncos and an error by the Jacks, CPP won the first game 25-21.
Both teams came out swinging in game two as they exchanged kills to make the score 4-2. However, the Broncos started to pull away to lead 10-5. HSU didn't give up as the Jacks made a four-point run to close CPP's five-point lead 13-10. The Broncos extended their lead to 16-10 which forced Humboldt's head coach Sue Woodstra to take a timeout.
CPP emerged out of that timeout unfazed as
Jessica Doerner added another kill to make the score 17-10. Broncos kept their lead to end the second game 25-16. Kreutziger and Doerner each collected four kills respectively.
The third game was similar to the second as CPP took an early lead of 5-1. With an impressive kill by
Ashley Marshman down the right side, Woodstra took her first timeout of the game at 6-1. It wasn't enough as the Broncos continued to extend their lead 10-3.
The Jacks axed through CPP's lead to bring the score within two but with a pivotal kill by Marshman and a service ace by
Celina Tabuena, the Broncos extended their lead yet again. HSU wasn't able to close the gap as Lake went up uncontested to score the match point, concluding the game at 25-17.
The Broncos collected 45 kills, 41 assists, 47 digs and eight service aces. CPP hit .286 in the match.
CPP will take on the undefeated Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino Friday, Oct. 14 in Kellogg Gym with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
