POMONA, Calif. - Commencing the final homestand of the 2011 season, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team defeated the Gators of San Francisco State, 3-2, in a 90-minute nailbiter Sunday.
The Broncos improve to 8-3-1 overall and a conference-best 7-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The result at Kellogg Field paired with Cal State Dominguez Hills' double-overtime loss to Sonoma State Sunday moves CPP into sole possession of first place in the conference's South Division.
Now, the Broncos will prepare for their final two home matches of the regular season with a Friday contest against Cal State Stanislaus and Sunday's Senior Day against Chico State. Kickoff for these games is at 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
Though a relatively modest match for the first 68 minutes, the mood of the match changed when junior defender
Liam Hall was taken out middair by SFSU freshman defender Jorge Valadas, who received a yellow card. The incident seemingly served as the impetus for the Broncos' offensive drive.
Nearly four minutes after entering the game to replace Hall, senior defender
Justin Smith crossed the ball to senior midfielder Nicolas Jimenez, who crossed it from the right to senior midfielder
Luis Gonzalez in front of the goal. Gonzalez spun around and shot it in the net to give the Broncos the lead, 3-2, at the 71:30 mark and bring his point total to five for the game.
Down 2-1 in the 55th minute, after senior defender
Victor Gutierrez's throw-in from the left side and senior midfielder
Louie Espino's flick header, Gonzalez tied the game on a header from five yards out to record his 10th goal of the season.
Getting the Broncos on the board early was senior forward
Jonathan Enns, who headed the ball into the goal following a cross from Gonzalez on the left and a pass from Gutierrez in the fourth minute of play.
But as the Gators increased their shot count in the opening half, so did their accuracy.
On a corner kick from the right in the 35th minute, junior forward L. Fidel Medina's drilled the ball to junior midfielder Edgar Villagrana, who proceeded to pound the ball five yards out into CPP junior goalkeeper
Kris Minton's torso before it caromed into the back of the net to even the score, 1-1.
Two minutes later, Medina gave the Gators a 2-1 lead when he tapped the ball into an opening on the right side after fielding senior defender Malcolm Linton's pass which bounced off another player.
Despite the Gators outshooting the Broncos, 10-5, in the opening half, the Broncos outshot the Gators, 10-7, in the second.
