ARCATA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team continued its recent stretch of inspired play Friday, cruising to a 3-0 road sweep of Humboldt State. Heading into Saturday's regular season finale, the Broncos have won five of their past six matches.
Friday's result in Arcata also continued the trend of CPP success through the all-time series with the Lumberjacks. The Broncos have been victorious in 20 of the teams' 21 meetings and this most recent win marked the 10th-straight for CPP.
The Broncos didn't waste any time Friday, rolling out to a 9-0 run with
Karissa Lagmay serving and four different CPP players registering kills in that span. HSU managed to pull to within one, 16-15, after a double block, but the Broncos rallied for a 25-17 win with two of CPP's final four points coming off
Kristin McNeese kills.
The second game proved to be close throughout and the Jacks took their first lead of the match with a 5-4 advantage in that frame. The Broncos pulled ahead once again and a 3-0 run from 14-10 to 17-10 helped CPP build a bit of a cushion, with two of those three points arriving from
Ashley Marshman kills.
The Broncos took a 23-20 lead at one point after a double block from
Jamie Kidd and
Taylr Kreutziger but HSU tallied three-straight points to even the score. Nonetheless, back-to-back Jacks' mistakes gave CPP the 25-23 result.
In the third and final game, the two squads engaged in a back-and-forth struggle. A kill by HSU's Oceana Matsubu evened the score at 8-8 but a 6-0 spurt for the Broncos stole away any momentum the hosts had gained. Kidd served CPP through most of that run and Lagmay chipped in with a kill and a block assist.
McNeese continued to put up strong attacks with help from
Katie Colin's setting but three-straight service aces from the Jacks' Brooke Ferguson brought the Broncos' lead down to two at 18-16. The third game hung in the balance at 23-23 but CPP took the 25-23 win following kills from Colin and
Diana Lake to finish off HSU.
The visiting Broncos collected 58 digs to the Jacks' 51. Libero
Kelly Bonja led CPP in that statistic with 13 of her own.
Up next for the Broncos is the regular season finale on Saturday at 7 p.m. with CPP challenging Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves are ranked 23rd nationally at the Division II level.
