POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team came back from being down two sets to none to defeat Cal State L.A. Wednesday at Kellogg Gym. The Broncos fought hard to win three consecutive sets, pushing past the Golden Eagles, 18-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-12.

It marked the first time in 2011 that CPP rallied for a victory after facing a 2-0 deficit. To find the last time that the Broncos defeated the Golden Eagles twice in regular season play, you'd have to go back to the 2004 campaign.

In the opening game Wednesday, freshman Lauren Jones notched the Broncos' first two kills to help the hosts stay close with the Golden Eagles. A pair of service aces from Kristin McNeese and a kill from Karissa Lagmay allowed CPP to overtake CSULA and gain a 7-5 advantage early on.

That margin ended up as the largest lead for the Broncos of the frame though, as the Golden Eagles rallied back and finished the game strong. Up 22-18 late, CSULA came up with three-straight kills to conclude the game.

The Broncos came out swinging in the second set; however, the Golden Eagles took control early as they commanded the speed of the game. CSULA was very aggressive at the net as it collected 31 kills in the second game.

CPP caught up to tie the score at 12-12 forcing the Golden Eagles' coaching staff to take a timeout. CPP led for the first time in the set at 15-13 but Golden Eagles were able to pull alongside the Broncos to gain the advantage late in the game with a score of 22-20. A kill from Jessica Doerner tied the score 22-22 forcing CSULA to take its second timeout. With three consecutive kills, the Golden Eagles capture game two, 25-22.

CPP started strong in the third set with two consecutive kills from McNeese and a kill from Taylr Kreutziger to lead early with a score of 6-2. Another kill from Doerner made the score 8-4; CSULA took their first time out of the set. The Golden Eagles took their second timeout at the Broncos lead of 18-10. CPP kept on rolling to win game three 25-15.

The momentum from the third set continued into the fourth as the Broncos commanded the start of the fourth set. The Golden Eagles were able to draw near to keep CPP within three points for most of the frame, forcing CPP head coach Rosie Wegrich to take her first timeout of the set at 18-16. CSULA drew within one at 21-20, but the Broncos were able to close the game with an ace from Kreutziger, forcing a fifth set.

Jones and Doerner put up a huge double block to win the first point of the fifth set. The Broncos extended their lead to 8-5 to switch sides. As CSULA came within one at 8-7, Wegrich took her first time out of the set. The Broncos came out of the time out swinging as Jones posted a quick kill from the middle making the score 9-7. A huge double block from Kreutziger and Kidd and a kill from Diana Lake ended the match with a score of 15-12. CPP outhit the Golden Eagles in the fifth set .190 to -.038.

McNeese paced the team with 14 kills, while Doerner and Kreutziger both posted nine kills. The Broncos as whole notched 57 kills, 59 digs and 16 blocks for the night.

Up next for the Broncos will be a Friday 7 p.m. matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Kellogg Gym. Prior to the start of the contest, CPP will honor the accomplishments of its four seniors Lagmay, Courtney Alberi, McNeese and Ashley Marshman.
