SAN FRANCISCO –
The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team on Wednesday came into Main Gymnasium and defeated San Francisco State, 73-59, to claim a victory in its first conference game of the 2011-12 season.

The Broncos improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams and will resume conference play on Dec. 1 at home against Cal State Stanislaus. Tipoff will set for 7:30 p.m.

In his CPP debut, redshirt sophomore guard DeRonn Scott scored a game-high 19 points to go along with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Senior forward Dwayne Fells scored 12 points and had six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block.

The Broncos put in a solid team effort to win their conference opener, as the bench contributed 38 points.

Coming off a 42-27 halftime lead, the Broncos extended their lead to 21 when Fells made a layup with 14:22 left in the game to make the score, 54-33.

The Gators upped their aggression on defense and forced the Broncos to pass the ball around, causing several turnovers and cutting CPP's lead to eight, 61-53, on a free throw by senior forward Daniel Trammel with 6:45 remaining in the game.

However, the Broncos did not crumble under the pressure of their opponents, maintaining a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half.

The Broncos played the opening half as if they were in midseason form, hitting 13 of 23 field goal attempts (56.5 percent), on their way to their 15-point halftime lead. Scott had 14 points in the first 20 minutes alone.

For the game, the Broncos made 23 of 49 (46.9 percent) compared to the Gators' 18 of 46 effort (39.1 percent).

The Gators (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) return to action Sunday against Saint Mary's at 4 p.m.
