POMONA, Calif. - Michelle Nava of the Broncos' women's soccer team earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 First Team, officials announced Friday. The senior defender holds one of the top grade point averages among Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes.

One of six defenders named to the Academic All-District squad, Nava has maintained a GPA of 3.83 while pursuing her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology.

Through the 2011 season, the Covina, Calif., native finished as one of three Broncos to start in each of the team's 18 matches. Nava totaled 1,656 minutes of action on the back line while helping CPP attain a low goals against average of 1.31.

Nava is a graduate of Bishop Amat High School and spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons at Mt. San Antonio College before transferring to join the Broncos' squad.

In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a player must have completed at least one academic year at CPP; must be a starter or significant reserve; must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average; and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution. Voting is done by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

CPP finished the 2011 campaign with marks of 8-6-4 overall and 6-6-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. In the most recent NCAA Division II West Region poll released Wednesday, the Broncos ranked eighth. The top six teams advance to the D-II postseason.
