POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team withstood the Cal State Dominguez Hills' defense to sweep the Toros Friday night, 25-16, 27-25, 25-16.
CPP started the match off with its senior night celebration, honoring the athletic and academic accomplishments of
Courtney Alberi,
Karissa Lagmay,
Ashley Marshman, and
Kristin McNeese. The seniors were joined by their family and friends to praise those players' achievements.
The first frame of the match started slow as the points rallied went back and forth as the Broncos kept the Toros within one. The crowd got pumped up as CPP won a long rally to tie the game at 11-11. The Broncos went on a roll as they extended their lead to 17-10, forcing the Toros to take a timeout. A big double block from
Taylr Kreutziger and Marshman ended the first game at 25-16.
A serve into the net by the Toros started the second set. CSUDH brought it back to lead 10-9. After a service ace by the Broncos and an attack error by the Toros, CPP took the lead at 13-11. After an attack error by the Broncos, CSUDH rallied the lead back 17-16 forcing CPP head coach,
Rosie Wegrich, to take a timeout.
The Broncos came out of the timeout swinging as Alberi collected a quick kill in the middle and ace. After an ace by Delea Pursel, the Toros tie the second set at 24-24. After a kill by Alberi and an error by CSUDH, CPP won the second set 27-25. The Broncos outhit the Toros .278 to .216.
Bullet like serves from Lagmay put the Broncos in the lead early, 5-1. The points kept coming for CPP as it extended its lead to 17-8. After a CSUDH timeout, Lagmay notched three aces in a row to command the lead at 20-9. The Toros drew near the Broncos at 21-14 but were unable to keep it going as the Alberi collected the match-winning kill. CPP won the third set 25-17.
The Broncos as a whole posted 35 kills, with a .330 hitting percentage, 34 assists, 35 digs and seven blocks. Lagmay reached a career high, posting seven service aces in the match. With Friday's result the Broncos have won the past four out of five matches.
The Broncos will end their season on the road as they take on the Jacks of Humboldt State Friday, Nov. 11 and the Seawolves of Sonoma State Saturday, Nov. 12.
