SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – With Tyquan Brown delivering a block and a steal in the final eight seconds of Saturday's game, the 14th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team captured an exciting 58-56 road victory over The Master's College.

The Broncos held the Mustangs scoreless through the final four and a half minutes, with that defense stand highlighted by Brown's two key stops. On offense, the deciding points came off of a clutch three-pointer from Terrence Drisdom.

With the result, CPP maintains its perfect record at 5-0 overall. The Mustangs fall to 8-2 through the early portion of the 2011-12 season. Three Broncos finished in double figures Saturday, as Dwayne Fells put up a game-high 15 while Matt Rosser and Drisdom added 11 apiece.

Despite the strong showing from the host TMC fans, the visiting CPP squad received a lift from a boisterous group of The Herd members that made the trip to Santa Clarita.

The Broncos managed to stake an 8-4 advantage when Andrew Steel sunk a jumper atop the free throw line.

The Mustangs countered quickly though, racing to an 8-0 run behind torrid shooting from all over their offensive zone.

The TMC charge was led by Leif Karlberg and Anthony Cammon, who both started out 3-for-3 from the field. The Broncos found a way to trim the Mustangs' lead back to two on several different occasions in the first half, with CPP's Connor Gacek feeding Drisdom and Fells for back-to-back layups.

TMC extended its lead to as many as eight points in the opening period, after the Mustangs' Jon Hogan knocked down a three-pointer with 3:27 remaining. The Broncos heightened its intensity on defense though, closing the half out with an 8-0 stretch to even the score at 33-33 heading into the break.

That spurt for CPP featured two successful jumpers by Rosser, a pair of free throws from Drisdom and Steel knocking down a shot to cap it all off. Although the Mustangs shot 59.1 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes, the Broncos were helped by their 17-10 rebounding edge in that span.

In the second half, CPP picked up right where it left off. Brown contributed three points of a 5-0 run to start the period, giving the Broncos their first advantage since early in the opening half.

Rosser and Gacek showed composure leading two separate fastbreak opportunities for CPP. Both sunk their respective layups and drew contact in the process, helping the Broncos reach their largest lead of the game at the 14:30 mark with a seven-point spread.

The Mustangs caught fire once again though, putting together a 9-0 run between the 12:05 and 5:53 marks. TMC pushed its lead to 56-49 after a bank shot from Anthony Cammon at the 4:28 mark.

The Broncos once again rallied late though, similarly to the closing moments of the first half. CPP finished the contest on a 9-0 stretch, which started after Fells converted a three-point play off a layup and a subsequent free throw.

With 2:07 remaining in regulation, Drisdom came through with a clutch trey that pulled the Broncos ahead by a 57-56 margin. Defense proved to be the highlight though, as the Mustangs took possession with 20 seconds left and only trailing by that one point.

Karlberg got a good look at the basket and went up for a three-point attempt but CPP's Brown got a piece of the shot and the ball ended up caroming off a TMC player, allowing the Broncos to take over.

The Mustangs fouled Rosser, who stepped to the line with eight seconds on the clock and CPP still holding the one-point edge. The senior guard hit one of his two attempts, leaving TMC hope for a last-second three-point attempt to win it. Karlberg worked it across midcourt but as he tried to flip a pass to a teammate, Brown stepped in to intercept and lock up the Broncos' 58-56 win.

Up next for CPP will be a 7:30 p.m. matchup on Thursday at Kellogg Gym against Pacifica College.
