POMONA, Calif. – Behind a 19-point performance from
Ariel Marsh, the 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a 70-52 win Saturday afternoon over Dixie State at Kellogg Gym.
The non-conference victory raised the Broncos' marks to 6-0 overall, while the visiting Red Storm fall to 5-3 through the early portion of the 2011-12 season.
CPP's defense played a huge part in the victory, forcing 27 turnovers from DSC and holding the visitors to just 18 first-half points.
Although the two teams were locked at 12-12 halfway through the opening period, Marsh knocked down back-to-back treys to initiate a 12-0 run for the hosts.
The Broncos' lead got as high as 17 in the first half before eventually settling at 33-18 heading into intermission.
Megan Ford dropped in CPP's first two buckets of the second half. The senior center impacted many different areas Saturday, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six assists.
Ford's second basket of that pair started a 10-0 stretch for the Broncos, a run that featured four different players scoring:
Charlene Popoff,
Lauren Goecke,
Rosslyn Beard and
Sarah Semenero.
A scoring drought late in the game for CPP allowed the Red Storm to pull within 13 but the Broncos' lead was never really in question.
Semenero joined Marsh in double figures, collecting 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
The Red Storm also had two players with double-digit point totals Saturday, as Erica Hayes totaled 13 while Sheila Adams added 12.
The Broncos outshot DSC from the floor, 43.8 percent to 34.4. From three-point range, the Red Storm converted just four of their 23 attempts. CPP proved to be more efficient from beyond the arc, going 6-for-13.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 5:30 p.m. home matchup on Thursday against local challenger Azusa Pacific.
