POMONA, Calif. – With sophomore guard
Ariel Marsh lighting up the scoreboard for 31 points on 12-for-14 shooting, the 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team topped the defending NAIA champs Azusa Pacific Thursday, 82-69.
Marsh, a Chino Hills, Calif., native, sunk seven three-pointers in her eight attempts while playing 27 minutes off the bench. The mark of seven is just one shy of the program record for three-pointers made in a game, as Elizabeth Edmond fired in eight during a 1997 game.
The victory stretches the Broncos' home winning streak to 17 and improves CPP's overall record this season to 7-0. The Broncos return to conference play later this month with road matchups at Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
Senior forward
Charlene Popoff joined Marsh in double figures for CPP. Popoff finished with 12 points, highlighted by a 6-for-8 performance at the free throw line.
The Broncos staked an early 13-2 advantage before Marsh even entered the game at the 13:58 mark. Popoff keyed that rally with a three-point play off a layup and free throw before later grabbing an offensive rebound en route to an easy putback.
Sarah Semenero also added a three-pointer off a
Lauren Goecke assist.
Marsh couldn't miss Thursday, as she started out 8-for-8 from the floor. She hit five of her seven treys in the first half, helping CPP take a 45-27 advantage into intermission.
The visiting Cougars improved their play in the second half, as Amber Williams and Briana Hall each contributed 13 points in the closing 20 minutes. The closest APU would get though would be seven points, after a successful free throw with 8:37 remaining to make it a 59-52 game.
That glimmer of hope for the Cougars didn't last long though, as the Broncos reeled off a 10-0 run immediately after that point. That stretch featured five more points from Marsh and four for
Rosslyn Beard.
Beard played an all-around solid game, collecting a career-high six assists to go along with five rebounds and two steals. Semenero reached a career high in assists as well with five of her own.
Jennifer Bryant turned in a stellar performance as a reserve, tallying nine points and grabbing four rebounds.
The Thursday, Dec. 29, matchup between CPP and the Coyotes of CSUSB will start at 5:30 p.m. at Coussoulis Arena.
