SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – On a cooler shooting night from the outside for the Broncos,
Megan Ford provided a dominant inside game Thursday to lift the 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team to a 62-53 road victory at Cal State San Bernardino.
With the result, the Broncos remain undefeated at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUSB falls to 2-7 overall and 1-4 through conference play.
Despite getting off to a slow start and facing a 28-14 deficit, the visiting Broncos rallied to outscore the Coyotes 48-25 over the final 26 minutes of action. Ford, a senior center from Newhall, Calif., led the way with her 13th-career double-double as she tallied 28 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
The performance for Ford featured a 12-for-12 effort at the free throw line, the best showing for a Bronco in that category since
Reyana Colson hit that same mark on Jan. 16, 2010 against Cal State L.A.
The Coyotes seized momentum early in Thursday's game, racing to a 9-2 start initiated by a jumper from CSUSB's leading scorer Eliza Dy on the opening possession.
With just more than three minutes gone, the Broncos struck for their first field goal on a
Charlene Popoff attempt. Despite CPP trimming the host's advantage to three points on a couple of occasions, the Coyotes' offense maintained its intensity and pushed the lead to 28-14 at the 6:34 mark with Dy tossing in a layup to cap off a 7-0 run.
That spurt from CSUSB was countered with the Broncos securing a 7-0 stretch of their own though, starting with
J.J. Judge putting in a shot after receiving a slick pass from Ford. On the next trip down the floor for CPP,
Sarah Semenero fired in a trey to cut the Coyotes' lead back to single digits at 28-19 with 5:46 remaining.
The late charge for the Broncos left the halftime score at 32-29 in favor of the host CSUSB squad.
A 4-0 run from CPP to start the second half gave the Broncos their first lead of the contest, with a bucket from Ford putting the visitors over the top. The two squads played even through the early portion of the closing half, trading the lead seven times between the 17:52 and 11:31 marks.
The CPP attack continued to gain momentum, even stretching the visitor's edge to 12 points after Ford dropped in another layup at the 4:17 mark.
The Broncos used a tremendous 48-31 rebounding advantage to create second-chance opportunities on offense and limit those same chances for the Coyotes. Popoff joined Ford with double-digit boards at 10.
Up next for CPP will be a Friday showdown at No. 4 UC San Diego. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at RIMAC Arena. The Tritons defeated San Francisco Thursday, 79-44.
