LA JOLLA, Calif. - Just before the close of the calendar year, a game between two of the conference's three unbeaten teams took place Friday but ended with the No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffering a 78-64 loss at No. 4 UC San Diego.
The Broncos drop to 8-1 overall and 4-1 against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams. They return to action on Thursday with a homestand and a new year, playing host to the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay (4-7, 1-4 CCAA). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
Senior center Megan Ford earned the 14th double-double for her career, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Ford also had two assists and a steal. With her layup putting the Broncos up 18-14 at the 7:56 mark, Ford recorded her sixth point of the game and the 1,000th of her career.
The only other Bronco finishing in double figures was sophomore guard J.J. Judge, who scored 13 points.
Down 40-27 at the intermission, the Broncos trimmed the lead to 11 when Ford nailed both of her free throws with 13:26 left to play to make the score, 50-39.
CPP also had a 7-0 run in the second half, capped off by senior forward Charlene Popoff's successful three-point play with 4:27 remaining.
The game began with neither team scoring in the first couple of possessions. Senior center Megan Ford's layup at the 17:03 mark ended the scoreless tie. Ford's basket was immediately followed by a three-pointer from senior guard Chelsea Carlisle, marking the first of seven opening-half lead changes. Carlisle matched Ford's game-high 20-point total.
The Broncos hung tough with the Tritons with a pair of 5-0 runs due in part by three-pointers from senior guard Sarah Semenero and sophomore guard Ariel Marsh. Semenero and Marsh finished with nine and three points, respectively.
Helped by CPP turnovers, UCSD scored half of its first-half points with less than six minutes remaining.
The Tritons (12-0, 6-0 CCAA) begin January with a road trip to Cal State Stanislaus (3-6, 0-5 CCAA). Tipoff is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m.
