POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team boasted two All-Americans in 2011. One graduated but the other,
Jacob Deavers, returns for his senior season in 2012.
Through hard work and dedication from the Broncos over the next five months, fifth-year head coach Troy Johnson looks to grow the CPP contingent that will head to the NCAA Division II National Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
Johnson released the track and field schedules this week and the Broncos will get a chance to qualify for championships nearly ever week from mid-February through mid-May. Between the men's and women's squads, CPP sent four student-athletes to nationals in 2010: Deavers, All-American
Lance Walkington, Tramieka Thomas and Heather Corder.
Aside from Deavers' work in hurdles and Walkington's success at the javelin, the Broncos' relay teams on the men's side also proved to be a highlight of the 2010 campaign.
On March 27 at the Cal Nevada Invitational, the CPP quartet of Deavers,
Matt Boudreau,
Corey Arnold and
Carter Griffin ran a time of 3:12.65 to top a variety of Division I competitors, including second-place UC Irvine (3:14.87) and third-place Sacramento State (3:15.47). The Broncos' time stands as the sixth-fastest in program history for that event and the best mark since 1993.
Arnold and Griffin exhausted their athletic eligibility at the conclusion of last season but Deavers and Boudreau, both All-West Region honorees, are poised to return with a stronger relay when paired with two more sprinters.
With regards to the distance crew for CPP track and field,
Ryan Carrell once again leads the pack. In the recently finished cross country season, Carrell placed fifth at the conference championships in Santa Rosa, Calif., and 18th at the West Region Championships in Spokane, Wash.
Looking at the 2012 schedule, the Mt. SAC Relays once again fit in the Broncos' slate for late April as the team also works up to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships, to be held on the campus of Cal State L.A. in early May.
The most important dates to circle for Deavers, Boudreau and the rest of the CPP squad though are May 24 through May 26, when the best athletes of Division II will gather in Colorado for the national meet.
